A signed macOS release for a Rust desktop app

A decentralized AI infrastructure company shipped its Rust desktop app for Windows and Linux, but not for the Mac. I built the macOS release path, and their lead engineer merged it after a public review.

The problem

The app ran on Windows and Linux. Mac users had no build at all.

A Rust and GTK4 app needs its GTK libraries, icons and resources inside the bundle, or it fails on a Mac that never had developer tools.

What I built

Built a GitHub Actions job that makes a signed universal disk image for Intel and Apple silicon Macs.

Bundled the GTK runtime libraries, icons and resources the app needs on a clean Mac.

Tested each build on a fresh macOS virtual machine.

Traced links that did not open to an open upstream GTK issue, and gave the team the links so they could replace the widget.

How the work ran

All review happened in the public pull request, comment by comment, until the merge.

Result

The lead engineer reviewed and merged the work into the main public repository on 5 July 2024.

The change added 231 lines across 8 files.
